The Witcher 4: CD Projekt Red Says RPG in Full-Scale Production

CD Projekt Red has officially confirmed that The Witcher 4 is now in full-scale production as the developer focuses on a story away from Geralt. CDPR has yet to reveal an exact release date, but we could see it before the end of 2025.

The Witcher 4 is a significant step for the series as it will be the first in the franchise not to have Geralt as the main protagonist. Announced in 2022, Project Polaris, as it was known then, was described as “the first installment in the new Witcher saga,” with the company hinting at a new trilogy.

Back in August, a financial report revealed The Witcher 4 was ready to move out of its preproduction phase. In CD Projekt Red’s Q3 2024 earnings report, joint CEO Michał Nowakowski has confirmed that “several weeks ago the Polaris team wrapped up preproduction and moved on to full-scale production.” Michal continues to say the company is “very pleased” with the progress on the upcoming RPG. The Witcher 4 is not only a massive shift in terms of story, as Geralt will only be a background character, but CD Projekt Red has moved from its own REDengine to Unreal Engine 5 as part of a “multi-year strategic partnership with Epic Games.” Many fans hope the partnership with Epic won’t result in an Epic Store exclusivity deal upon the game’s launch. CDPR has previously stated it won’t be an Epic exclusive title.

What fans can expect with UE5 is a visually stunning open world with cutting-edge features and ultra-realistic graphics. CD Projekt Red’s reputation of building expansive worlds with rich lore will be tested, and with UE5, fans can anticipate a game likely to surpass The Witcher 3 in scale and detail.
